Next Blog>>

Have you guys ever hit the "next blog" button in the upper right hand corner? There's some interesting, sometimes weird, and a lot of japanimation out there. However, I did find one that I constantly keep checking:

http://cm88.blogspot.com/

Apparently, it's a U.S. soldier in Mosul, Iraq and he's been tellin' the story of what it's like over there. He's been in Iraq since Sept. and still has several months to go. If you get the chance, read the entire blog from the beginning. Hope he makes it out ok.

New York City Blizzardfest 2005! Part Dos

Alrighty, I'm back working for the man. Time to finish what I started.

Fri. Jan. 21st
Another frigid day begins. First thing in the morning we head out walking south. First thru Chelsea into Greenwich Village. The village seems like a very cool place. When I go back to NYC, I would really like to stay in this part of the city. Cool places to eat and drink. We got to see the Village Vangaurd but we didn't go in. We just kept trucking to Washington Square Park, where we were offered some ganja, of course! I politely declined, knowing he could've been a narc. Remember kids, always know your dealer. Then we passed by NYU. I was hoping to see some paparazzi stalking Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen but no luck. After making a right on Broadway, we entered Soho. So many shops! I think there was a Banana Republic on every corner. It was also to cool to see Chinatown. McDonalds with Chinese writing? I should've taken a picture but it was too cold to attempt. We finally arrived at Ground Zero. It made me really miss the twin towers. I would've loved to seen the skyline with those mammoth buildings.

After walking so far and wanting to warm up a bit, we stopped at a bar in the financial district called Blarney Stone(there was one in Midtown too). We each ordered an alcoholic beverage and an older gentleman whose name was Tony began a conversation with us. He was a local New Yorker, when he found out that we were from the south, we got into a discussion about the differences between north and south. Apparently, Tony has never been out of the northeast, his geography skills were not that sharp either. We talked about things ranging from politics to the Civil War. I was flattered when he thought I was a school teacher. We wound up having a few more drinks and Tony bought a round as well. It was time to leave Tony and head off to the Staten Island Ferry.

The Staten Island Ferry is the best freebie in town. It took us right by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I took many pictures even though the wind chill outside had to be about -10 below. When we arrived back to Manhattan, we rushed to Battery Park so I could get a good picture of the 9/11 WTC Sphere monument. When I say rushed, I mean we pretty much ran b/c the sun had dropped and so had the temperature. We then hopped on the #6 train back up to midtown.

After resting up, we went to the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill for some good eating and music. I had the ribs(which I highly recommend) and Lynn had calamari. You never can go wrong with ribs and a 3-piece blues band.

Sat. Jan 22nd
And then there was snow! And a lot of it. We watched the news the day before and they had issued a blizzard warning for the northeast. Blizzard warning? Fuck it. I still had to make the trip to the East Village to Rock n' Roll Mecca, otherwise known as the CBGB. We left as the snow started pouring down on the city. Once we got off of the subway, the wind and snow was coming down full force. We could hardly even look up to see what street we were on. Once we walked about a block, I could see the white awning with red letters, CBGB. We weren't sure if it was open or not so we just walked in. I got to see inside and got to see the stage. We asked if they were open and they said no but next door was CB's Gallery(art, bar, little acoustic stage). We sat down and ordered a beer and a hundred dollars worth of t-shirts. The young lady behind the bar bought our beers for buying so many t-shirts. Wasn't that sweet for a tatooed, pierced bartender? We soon left and made our way thru the blinding snow to the subway. We got off of the subway at Grand Central Station. It was very cool to finally see the main entrance. That place is huge! When then walked thru the snow back to the hotel. My legs were so sore from walking the day before, the snow did not help matters at all. I didn't want to walk another step. But I had to if I wanted to eat.

Lynn had a taste for sushi on this night. There was a small sushi place about 3 blocks down from the hotel. It was about as big as a closet but nice. I had some great entertainment watching Lynn ordering sushi, she had never done it before. Adding to the entertainment factor was the Japenese waitress who did not speak very good English. Good times. It was back thru the blizzard to the hotel for sex.(happy Robin?)

Sun. Jan. 23rd
The day we were supposed to leave. Well, we didn't b/c the day before we changed our flight to Monday evening and booked an extra night at the hotel. We tried to move up our flight Sat. morning but everything had already been cancelled. No matter. An extra day in NYC? Hells yeah!

There was still snow everywhere. We decided to go to Macy's. Man, that's a big fucking store! We figured since we were doing the store thing, we might as well head up to 5th Ave. We walked into Tiffany & Co. and looked at things that we will never buy. Walked into Trump Tower. I should've walked up to the doorman and told him, "You're fired" in that sleezy Trump accent. Lynn really wanted to buy something from FAO Schwartz for her son but the rat bastards were closed b/c of a little bit of snow. Well, I think we had enough of looking at all of the 5th Ave types, so we hopped on the subway to take us back to the hotel. While we were waiting for the train to take us back, an annoucement came on stating that there is a fire at one of the stops and all trains were being re-routed. FUCK! That means we would have to walk the rest of the way. I needed a muscle relaxer for my damn legs.

Mon. Jan. 24th
It was time to leave the Big Apple. We got to the airport about 3hrs early but we waited in the security line for about 45min. Once thru security we ate and drank at the Chili's. I needed something to wash down the dramamine. Our flight back was nice, as soon as we got off of the plane at GSP, it felt so much warmer, it was like spring time.

All in all it was a great trip with a great person. I can't wait to get back up there and explore some more. Of course, it'll be summertime next trip.

New York City Blizzardfest 2005! Part Uno

I think Lynn and I picked the wrong week to go to NYC. None the less, NYC is by far the best city I've been to. I wished we could've stayed longer, so much more to do, so much more to see. We had an awesome time. Here's a brief day by day run down of what went down:

Wed. Jan 19th:
Arrived at Laguardia and it was a bowl of chilly outside. As soon as we get our bags, a guy comes up to us and asks if we need a taxi into the city. Of course we say yes. I ask him how much and he says $55. Automatically Lynn says that sounds about right. Ok, everything that I've read has said that cab fees run from $25 to $35 depending on traffic, already this seems kinda sketchy. We follow the guy out the door and he is walking away from where all the cabs are and Lynn asks what he is driving and he says a Montero Sport. That's the point where I said, "Lynn, lets take one of those taxis at the 'Taxi Dispatch' booth". I'm sure the guy wasn't happy but I didn't give a shit. So we hopped in our NYC licensed taxi and headed out to the city. Side note: I was all tore down on too much Dramamine.

We get to our hotel, The New Yorker on the corner of 34th and 8th. Diagonally across from Madison Square Garden. Great Midtown location. Our room was terrible. It had a horrible draft coming thru the window which made the room as cold as all outside. When eventually got another room which was much warmer and higher up(33rd floor). The first thing we did was head up to the top of the Empire State Building. I was still discombobulated from the Dramamine and the city was just so overwhelming at first. And the damn maze we had to go thru to the top of the massive skyscraper was just annoying. Once we got up top, it was well worth the confusion. It started to snow as soon as we walked outside. The view was kinda hazy, but amazing. I also think we were the only Americans on top of this building, come to think of it a majority of the people in NYC were foriegners. We ate at some place called O'reillys Pub(I think), burnt chicken parmigana, hmmm good. I thougth it was a cool little place though. I also thought that it had a nice waterfall, until the waiter stated that it was a busted water pipe. No matter, it was time to get back to the room and thaw out.

After warming our bones, we made the 8 block trek to Times Square. I've seen it hundreds of times on TV but it was cool just to be able to say, "Hey! There's that Toys 'R Us with the big fuckin' ferris wheel in it!" and "that's where the ball drops!". Tourists, I know. On our way back thru Times Square, we stopped at the Times Square Brewery for a few beverages and watched a cool New Orleans Jazz band rock out. By the end of the day, I felt like I had the rhythm of the city down and was totally exicted for the next day to arrive.

Thurs. Jan 20th:
Our hotel had a diner attached to it, so that's where we ate breakfast every morning. I wanted to ask for some grits just for the hell of it, but decided against it.

I pretty much had this day planned from the get go. We walked north to Central Park. Of course I had to make it to 72nd and Central Park West to see the place where John Lennon was murdered and to see the Imagine mosaic. While we were walking thru Central Park, we saw some other tourist taking pictures and asked if they would take ours. They politely did, then asked us if we were from Kentucky. Kentucky? We know we have an accent but WTF? Why Kentucky? Maybe we smelled of fried chicken or horse shit, who knows. They happened to be from Nebraska. I should've said that they sounded like they were from Oklahoma. Anyways, we stopped to have lunch at the famous Tavern on the Green in the park. Very chic place, very good food. I even ordered a glass of wine I was feeling so sophisticated. You'll have to get Lynn to tell you about the rich little girls who were having their birthday luncheon with their dolls and tye-dye balloons. Upper westside folk.

After eating lunch we had to hurry up to the Ed Sullivan Theater to get our tickets for the Late Show with David Letterman. Yes, that's right, David Letterman. I found out the day before we left that I had got tickets to the Thursday taping, I was so pumped about this. Once we got our tickets, we had 35mins. to kill until they lined us up to go in. During this time, we stopped for some hot chocolate at the Hello Deli, where I had my picture taken with international superstar Ruppert Jees. We left the deli and on the way to the designated spot where we line up to enter the theater, Robert Downey Jr. was getting out of his SUV. I was going to hit him up for some good drugs but someone mentioned that he has been clean for a while. So instead, I snapped a great close up of one the brat pack. Was he one of the brat pack? I don't know. The Ed Sullivan Thearter was so small, much smaller than on TV anyway. And yes, it was cold in there. First, a comic came out and told a few jokes and then introduced the band one at a time, they played Basket Case by Green Day, then Letterman came running out like a mad man. He took a few questions from the audience, and then the show started. The other guest besides Downey Jr. was Nicole Richie. She's a lot smaller in person. Then Downey Jr. came out and sang a song off of his album(coffee house music). All in all it was a great show and a great experience.

When that was done it was back to the hotel once again to thaw out. Our hotel also had a nice Italian restuarant attached to it where we at that evening. Good food and beers. Time to get rested up for day 3.

You'll have to tune in this weekend for the rest of the story. Why? Because I'm at work and I have work to do. I will not be back in until Friday night.

American Aquarium Drinkers Unite!!!!!

Alright everbody, it's on for Feb. 21st. Austin, Robin, Wes, Tracy, and Lynn you now have tickets for the Wilco show in Charlotte. As stated in an earlier comment, "It's on like Donkey Kong!".

The seats are in Mezzcr row DD. Here's the seating chart:

http://www.ticketmaster.com/seatingchart/114704/3620

They're not bad seats. I think I had the same exact seats when I saw the Crowes back in '96.

Beatallica

I took this off of the board at http://www.gloriousnoise.com/

I know it's kind of odd but it's funny as hell. Apparently it's two anonymous guys(b/c they don't want to be sued by Lars) mixing Metallica and Beatle songs. They are not for sale but they are downloadable MP3's. Check it out: http://beatallica.com/

2005

Well, I hope everyone had a good holiday. I also hope everyone ate their greens and black-eyed peas, cause I sure as hell didn't. My holiday was good, but now it's back to my normal work schedule, wait, I don't have a normal work schedule.

I'm actually looking forward to the new year. Normally, I think of Jan. 1st as just another day. This year I feel something totally different, something positive for whatever reason. Could be due to the fact that I'm in a great relationship. Could be because we're going to NYC in a few weeks. Could be due to Pearl Jam coming out with a new album and touring this year. Could be due to Wilco coming to Myrtle Beach and Charlotte next month. Could be due to me eating my first salad two days ago(no, not that kind of salad, pervs). Who knows for sure, but I think this could turn out to be a great year.
